A SAFER COMMUNITY THROUGH POSITIVE CHANGE.
The mission of the La Paz County Adult/Juvenile Probation Department is to provide the highest quality service to the courts, community, victims of crime and adult/juvenile offenders. This is accomplished by offering accurate, reliable information, promoting public safety through effective community-based supervision and affording offenders a realistic opportunity to initiate positive life changes.
OUR GUIDING FRAMEWORK
As our framework to fulfull our mission in the community, the Probation Department follows the model of Balanced and Restorative Justice (BARJ). Restorative Justice is a collaborative, community-based response to crime that addresses how best to repair the harm caused by an offense. BARJ takes Restorative Justice one step further by identifying three components to the Balanced Approach: Accountability, Competency Development and Community Safety.
Accountability suggests that the offender has a duty to make amends to the person he or she has harmed. Competency Development directs offenders to exit the criminal justice system with more skills and competencies than when entering it.
Community Safety reflects the expectation that stakeholders in the community will provide meaningful support and services for offenders, while at the same time holding offenders accountable to a range of sanctions to reduce reoffending.
Balanced and Restorative Justice is an evidence-based and cost-effective model for controlling and reducing crime. As agents of change, we use it to guide us in our daily interactions with offenders, crime victims and the community at large.
